They're master and pupil. I first saw that man at a tournament where he was patting Minato on the head. Later Minato said that his coach shoots beautifully and that he was his "goal" now. At the last tournament, Minato couldn't stop watching him with awe.

Rivalry's about more than skill anyway. If you don't know that you do suck at being one. You just need to find your own coach. Even if it's not a real coach. As ling as they are some kind of light piercing the dark and keeping you from falling.
If that's what your rival's coach is to him you can't take that away.
